HyperText Version Control Protocol

H
ypertext Version Control Protocol is a system with which computer applications can use the World Wide Web to check for newer versions of themselves or other programs. The system is similar to SIVC, but does not require a dedicated server or server software.

HTVCP information is stored on a web page and is invisible to browsers. HTVCP-savvy programs simply download the web page, which contains information about which version of the software is current, and where the most current version can be located. HTVCP even includes the ability to redirect querying programs to a new address.

You may use HTVCP in your programs freely; I ask only that you give me credit in your about box or documentation. From the list below you may read or download the HTVCP specification or download an HTVCP Class for REALbasic. If you develop programs in a different language and would like to create an HTVCP module or class to share with other developers, please contact me at toby@tobyrush.com.
